Overview

Global health is the field concerned with health issues that transcend national boundaries and with achieving equitable improvement in health for populations worldwide, with particular attention to low- and middle-income countries. It draws on epidemiology, public health, medicine, and the social sciences to understand the distribution and determinants of disease and to design interventions that reduce health disparities. Core concerns include infectious and non-communicable disease burden, environmental and climate-related threats, health-systems strengthening, and the social and economic factors that shape health outcomes. Research in this area examines the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases, the public-health impact of climate change, tobacco control and other prevention efforts, mental health in the context of pandemics, vaccine uptake among healthcare workers, the effectiveness of quality-improvement strategies in healthcare facilities, and the structure and performance of health systems in developing settings. Further strands address nutrition, ageing, bioethics, and the determinants of substance use across populations. Global health matters because disease, environmental change, and health inequity are interconnected challenges that require coordinated, evidence-based responses across countries and disciplines. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the determinants of population health, disease prevention and control, and health-systems and policy questions in international and resource-varied contexts.
