Rectal Prolapse

Rectal prolapse is a condition that occurs when the walls of the rectum (the last part of the large intestine) slide out of place, causing the rectum to protrude from the anus. It is a relatively uncommon condition, affecting both sexes and all ages, although is more common in elderly women. It usually results from straining due to constipation, advanced age, childbirth, or a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. Symptoms of rectal prolapse include a bulge or lump coming out of the rectum, leakage of mucus or stool, difficulty controlling bowel movements, and anal pain. Treatment includes lifestyle changes and physical therapy to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, as well as surgery in more severe cases. Early diagnosis and management are important to avoid any long-term complications.
