Intestinal Pathogens
Intestinal pathogens are microorganisms that cause disease in the human gastrointestinal tract. Examples of such pathogens include Salmonella, Entamoeba histolytica and Escherichia coli. These bacteria and parasites can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. Intestinal pathogens are responsible for major health problems in developing countries, as well as in more developed countries. Treatment of these pathogens depends on the particular type of pathogen and can include antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitics and other medications. Proper hygiene and sanitation practices can help in preventing the spread of intestinal pathogens and reducing the incidence of associated diseases.
