Intestinal Ischemia
Intestinal ischemia is a condition in which the blood supply to the intestines is reduced and the ability to absorb nutrients is impaired. It can range from mild to life-threatening, and is most often caused by a decrease in blood flow due to clogged or blocked arteries. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and changes in bowel movements. Diagnosis is made through a combination of physical examination, laboratory tests, imaging scans, and endoscopy. Treatment depends on the severity of the ischemia, but may involve medications, lifestyle modifications, and in some cases, surgery. Intestinal ischemia is a serious condition and can lead to serious complications such as sepsis and intestinal necrosis, so early diagnosis and intervention are important for successful management.
