Intestinal Epithelium
The intestinal epithelium is an important part of the gut mucosa and is responsible for maintaining the integrity and function of the digestive tract. It acts as a barrier to prevent the absorption of pathogens and toxins, while allowing essential nutrients and water to be absorbed. This epithelium also plays a role in the immune system, providing a physical barrier against microorganisms and regulating the development of immune cells. It also aids in the digestion process by secreting digestive enzymes and contributing to the absorption of nutrients. The maintenance of the intestinal epithelium is thus vital for protecting and maintaining a healthy digestive system.
