Gastrointestinal Tract
The gastrointestinal tract, or GI tract, is a long tube-like system which runs from the mouth to the anus, with the stomach and small and large intestines forming most of it. It is responsible for the digestion and absorption of food, as well as the elimination of solid waste. The GI tract enables the body to take in and use the essential nutrients in food, and to eliminate undigested food wastes. Certain medications, illnesses, and dietary choices can affect the function of the GI tract, and conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis can occur. It is important to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle to maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract.
