Digestive System
The digestive system is an essential part of the human body as it is responsible for breaking down the food we eat into its basic components and delivering these essential nutrients to the rest of the body. It begins at the mouth, where food is chewed and mixed with saliva, and then continues through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine before ending at the rectum, where waste products are eliminated. Along the way, other organs, such as the liver, pancreas and gallbladder, become involved in the digestion process. The digestion of food provides the body with the energy and the micronutrients needed to remain healthy and perform its vital functions.
