Colon, Descending
The colon, descending is a section of the large intestine, responsible for eliminating waste from the body. It is located in the lower part of the abdominal cavity, and is connected to the jejunum in the small intestine, and to the sigmoid colon at the end. The descending colon plays an important role in the digestive process, secreting mucus and aiding in the absorption of water and electrolytes. It also helps to store waste before it is eliminated through the rectum. Its length, diameter, and position may vary between individuals, but it typically measures around 12 inches. Abnormalities in the colon, descending, such as inflammation, can lead to abdominal pain, diarrhea and other conditions. Therefore, it is important to maintain the health of this section of the intestine by eating a balanced diet, exercising and avoiding stress.
