Overview
Hereditary refers to traits, conditions, or characteristics that are passed from parents to offspring through genes carried in DNA. Hereditary conditions arise from variations or mutations in the genetic material that are inherited across generations, and they can follow patterns such as dominant, recessive, or sex-linked inheritance. Many diseases have a hereditary component, ranging from single-gene disorders, in which a mutation in one gene causes a specific condition, to complex disorders influenced by multiple genes interacting with environmental factors. Understanding heredity is central to medical genetics, enabling the identification of disease-causing mutations, risk assessment within families, genetic counseling, and the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. Research published in this journal's network has examined hereditary mechanisms in human disease, including the genetic mutations underlying inherited bleeding disorders affecting blood coagulation factors and regulatory proteins, and the molecular analysis of gene defects in patients with phenylketonuria, an inherited metabolic disorder. Other work has explored the distinction between hereditary and sporadic, non-inherited forms of cancer. Together these studies illustrate how genetic inheritance shapes susceptibility to disease. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to inherited conditions and their genetic basis within the broad scope of the journal Hereditary Diseases.
