Overview
Obstetrics and gynaecology, commonly abbreviated OB/GYN, is the medical specialty devoted to the female reproductive system and to pregnancy and childbirth. Gynaecology addresses the health of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina, including menstrual disorders, infections, benign and malignant tumours, fertility, and the changes of menopause. Obstetrics concerns the care of women during pregnancy, labour, delivery, and the postpartum period, with the goal of protecting the health of both mother and child. The two fields are closely linked because the structures and functions they study overlap, and practitioners often manage the full continuum from reproductive health through pregnancy to gynaecological surgery. Core concerns include prenatal care, the management of high-risk pregnancies and obstetric emergencies, the anatomy and pathology of the placenta and umbilical cord, contraception and fertility preservation such as elective oocyte freezing, and reproductive choices. Research relevant to this topic spans training in basic and advanced life support in obstetrics, anatomical study of the placenta and umbilical cord in relation to neonatal outcome, and attitudes toward fertility preservation and reproductive care. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to obstetrics and gynaecology.
