Overview

Malignant diseases are disorders characterised by uncontrolled, invasive proliferation of abnormal cells that can spread beyond their tissue of origin and metastasise to distant sites. They encompass solid tumours, such as carcinomas and sarcomas arising in epithelial and connective tissues, and haematological malignancies, including the leukaemias and lymphomas that originate in blood-forming and lymphoid cells. Malignancy reflects the accumulation of genetic and microenvironmental changes that disrupt normal controls on growth, differentiation, and cell death, and its clinical impact depends on tumour type, stage, and biological behaviour. The literature gathered here examines malignant disease across several fronts. Studies of lymphoma address subtypes and treatment outcomes in resource-limited settings and biochemical correlates of disease activity, such as elevated lactate dehydrogenase tracking lymphoma progression in children. Solid-tumour research includes the evolving properties of human tumour cells studied in experimental systems and the characterisation of cancers of the prostate and bone. A distinctive strand investigates the trace-element composition of malignant tissues, measuring metals and mineral contents in chondrosarcoma, prostate adenocarcinoma, and related cancers, and explores element ratios as potential non-invasive screening markers. Together these contributions situate malignant disease within an effort to understand tumour biology, refine diagnosis through molecular and biochemical markers, and improve treatment outcomes across diverse cancers and populations.
