Overview

Hematology and oncology research refer to the scientific study of diseases that affect the blood and lymphatic systems. Hematologic malignancies are a group of diseases that develop in the blood cells, bone marrow, lymphatic system, and other parts of the body's hematopoietic system. This type of cancer involves the abnormal growth and division of blood cells, which can lead to several health complications such as anemia, infection, and bleeding disorder. Hematologic malignancies include leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Leukemia is a type of hematologic malignancy that develops in the bone marrow, causing the overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. These cells do not function properly, leading to a weakened immune system and a risk of infection. Lymphoma, on the other hand, is a cancer of the lymphatic system, resulting in the abnormal growth and division of lymphocytes - a type of white blood cell. Lymphoma can develop in the lymph nodes, bone marrow, spleen, or other parts of the body. Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells that produce antibodies to fight infection. In myeloma, abnormal plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow, leading to a weakened immune system, anemia, kidney problems, and bone pain. Hematology and oncology research aim to understand the biology of hematologic malignancies, identify the underlying causes, and develop effective treatments. Scientists investigate the genetic mutations that cause these cancers and work on developing targeted therapies that can attack cancer cells without harming healthy cells. In summary, hematologic malignancies are a range of diseases that affect the blood and lymphatic system. Hematology and oncology research aim to gain deeper insights into these conditions and develop effective treatments to improve the lives of people living with hematologic malignancies.
