Overview

Blood chemistry is the branch of laboratory medicine concerned with measuring and analyzing the chemical components of blood to assess health and diagnose disease. Through blood tests, clinicians examine substances such as electrolytes, glucose, proteins, enzymes, lipids, hormones, waste products, and other markers that reflect the function of organs and the body's metabolic and physiological state. Abnormal levels of these constituents can indicate a wide range of conditions, helping to detect, monitor, and guide the treatment of disorders affecting the kidneys, liver, heart, endocrine glands, and other systems. In the fields of hematology and oncology, blood analysis is especially important, encompassing the study of blood cells and their production alongside the chemical profile of the blood, and providing essential information for diagnosing and monitoring blood disorders and cancers. The components of blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets suspended in plasma, each carry out specialized roles, and changes in their numbers or in the chemical environment of the blood offer valuable diagnostic clues. As a topic within Hematology and Oncology Research, blood chemistry reflects the field's reliance on the laboratory analysis of blood to understand normal physiology and to detect and characterize disease, supporting research and clinical care across a broad spectrum of conditions.
