Mineral Metabolism and the Kidney
Mineral metabolism and the kidney are closely linked. The kidneys regulate mineral concentrations in the body by filtering out excess minerals and regulating their absorption, excretion and reabsorption. The body requires minerals such as sodium and potassium to maintain a healthy balance of certain biochemical processes. Inadequate renal mineral metabolism can lead to serious medical conditions such as hypertension, cardiomyopathy, and hyperkalemia, which can have severe negative health impacts. Proper management of mineral metabolism and kidney health is essential for overall wellbeing.
