Overview

Enzyme metabolism refers to the enzyme-catalyzed chemical reactions through which living cells transform molecules, encompassing both the breakdown of larger compounds to release energy and building blocks (catabolism) and the synthesis of cellular components (anabolism). Enzymes are protein catalysts that accelerate these reactions with high specificity, lowering the energy required and allowing metabolic pathways to proceed under physiological conditions. Through their coordinated action, enzymes enable processes such as the digestion of nutrients, the generation of cellular energy, the production of proteins and lipids, and the detoxification or modification of substrates. The activity of metabolic enzymes is governed by factors including substrate availability, cofactors, pH, temperature, and regulatory mechanisms, and disruptions in enzyme function can underlie metabolic disorders. The study of enzyme structure, catalytic mechanism, substrate interactions, and regulation is central to understanding how cells maintain and adjust their metabolism. Within the scope of glycomics and metabolism, enzyme-catalyzed reactions are examined in relation to carbohydrate processing, metabolic regulation, and disease states involving altered metabolism. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to enzymes, metabolic pathways, and the biochemical processes that sustain cellular function.
