Mitochondria
Mitochondria are the “powerhouse” of the cell – organelles that generate energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). They are found in the cells of all eukaryotic organisms, from plants to animals. Mitochondria are essential for bodily functions such as metabolism, respiration, and cell growth. They also have a role in cell death, and the abnormal functioning of mitochondria can lead to diseases, such as cancer and many others. Consequently, research into mitochondrial function and its regulation has become a priority in molecular and cell biology.
