Introgression

Introgression is the transfer of genetic material between two species by interbreeding. This process can occur naturally or can be the result of deliberate human intervention. It has become a useful tool in evolutionary biology, genetics, and horticulture for understanding and manipulating genetic variation. The effects of introgression can be profound, making it an important method for introducing and maintaining genetic diversity within a species. This has a range of applications from plant and animal breeding, to the transfer of genes to improve disease resistance or enhance performance traits. Introgression is also used in conservation genetics to protect or restore endangered species.
