Overview

Genetics is the scientific study of heredity and variation—how traits and disease predispositions are encoded in DNA, transmitted across generations, and expressed in organisms. It spans molecular, population, and evolutionary levels, encompassing the structure and function of genes, the inheritance of characters, the dynamics of genetic variation in populations, and the genetic basis of adaptation and speciation. Genetics informs medicine, agriculture, and conservation, supporting the understanding and management of inherited disorders, the improvement of crops and livestock, and the interpretation of evolutionary processes. Research in this area ranges from population and evolutionary genetics to the genetic basis of human traits and disease. The journal publishes peer-reviewed work relevant to genetics, including studies of precision in plant genetics and breeding, natural selection framed as nonlinear genetics, the interaction of cultural factors and genetics in sleep phenotypes, ontogenes and speciation, regulatory mechanisms of candidate genes in cardiovascular disease, inbreeding in families and populations, allele-based inference on evolution, dietary treatment in genetically influenced conditions, missing heritability in genomic studies, and models of speciation. This work examines heredity and variation across molecular, population, and evolutionary scales, reflecting the breadth of genetics as a discipline that links the transmission and expression of genes to health, evolution, and the diversity of living organisms.
