Genetic Load
Genetic Load is the increase in deleterious genetic mutations over time in an organism, group of organisms, or population. This can be caused by natural selection or a lack of it. This phenomenon has significant implications for population size, biodiversity and evolution. Research into genetic load and its implications for, for example, cancer, can help us to understand the evolution of certain diseases and inform potential treatments. It is also used in conservation efforts as it can inform us of how to best manage and protect certain populations.
