Overview

Dwarfism, also known as short stature, is a condition characterized by an adult's height of 4 feet 10 inches or less. It is caused by a variety of genetic and medical conditions. Dwarfism carries both social and medical implications. Socially, individuals with dwarfism may experience stigma or discrimination, whereas the medical implications include increased risk of certain illnesses, such as heart defects. Additionally, dwarfism can also affect a person’s social and psychological well-being. Early diagnosis and awareness are important for individuals and families to reduce potential stigma and discrimination, as well as to provide the appropriate medical care and resources for individuals with dwarfism. Physicians, genetic counselors, and other medical professionals can provide information and support to those affected.
