Yeast
Yeast is a type of single-celled fungus present in the environment which is widely used in various food production processes. It is an essential ingredient in the production of bread, beer and wine, where it breaks down sugar to produce carbon dioxide gas which makes the dough rise and ferments the alcohol in alcoholic beverages. Yeast has also been used in industrial biotechnology applications, such as for the production of biofuels and in bioremediation processes for cleaning up hazardous contaminants. Its importance as a key ingredient in food production, its use in biotechnology applications, and its helpful role in bioremediation processes makes yeast a valuable microorganism in modern society.
