Osteichthyes
Osteichthyes (or bony fish) are a major group of fish species. They are characterized by a skeletal system composed of bone, rather than cartilage like that of other fish. Osteichthyes are a major source of global food production and are one of the most diverse animal groups on earth. They form an important part of the aquatic food web and play a crucial role in many of the world’s ecosystems. Osteichthyes have a wide range of uses, from recreational fishing, to aquaculture, to medical research. Their market value is estimated to be in the trillions of dollars globally. Osteichthyes are also a vital source of employment, providing jobs in many countries around the world.
