Overview
Maize (Zea mays), also known as corn, is a cereal grass domesticated in the Americas and now among the world's principal staple and feed crops. Its grain is rich in starch with appreciable protein and oil, and it serves human nutrition, animal feed, and industrial and biofuel uses, while the whole plant is widely conserved as silage. As a C4 photosynthetic species, maize is studied for productivity, stress tolerance, and forage quality, and its cultivation is shaped by soil fertility, fertilization, and crop management. Research relevant to this topic includes the evaluation of forage-silage traits comparing maize with hybrid giant Napier grass, the use of biofertilizers on maize silage and its effects on milk quality and farm economy, and the alleviation of nickel toxicity in maize seedlings through triacontanol by limiting uptake and enhancing antioxidant defenses. Related work addresses the detection of smuggled genetically modified crops and their environmental impact, spectroscopic and foliar-pH models for yield and kernel-quality prediction in symbiotic corn production, the roles of plant circular RNAs, and the impact of agricultural land use on water quality. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in food science, agronomy, and hygiene addressing maize cultivation, quality, safety, and its role in food and feed systems.
