Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in the body and in some foods. It is an important component of cell membranes and is used to make hormones and vitamin D. High levels of cholesterol in the blood can lead to the buildup of fatty deposits in the blood vessels (atherosclerosis), which in turn can cause heart disease and stroke. Eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and taking medications such as statins can help to reduce your cholesterol levels.
