Overview

Surgery is the branch of medicine that treats disease, injury, and deformity through operative manipulation of tissues and organs. It spans a continuum from minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures to open and complex reconstructive operations, and it integrates preoperative assessment, intraoperative technique and anesthesia, and postoperative recovery and complication management. Surgical care is organized into specialties—including general, otolaryngologic, ophthalmic, orthopedic, cardiac, oncologic, and Fetal Surgery—each with distinct indications, techniques, and outcome measures, and it increasingly incorporates technological advances such as laser-assisted and image-guided methods. Research themes across the field include the evolution of Fetal Surgery and intervention for congenital conditions, refinements in sinonasal and turbinate surgery, femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and its tissue effects, acute normovolemic hemodilution in complex cardiac surgery, nutritional consequences of bariatric surgery in pregnancy, venous thromboembolism risk after orthopedic surgery, and outcomes of retinal and oncologic procedures. Surgical innovation is evaluated for efficacy, safety, and reproducibility, and transparent reporting of complications and outcomes—including unfavorable results—is essential to improving practice. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical research on operative techniques, perioperative management, surgical outcomes, and innovation across multiple surgical disciplines, supporting evidence-based decision-making and the advancement of surgical care for diverse conditions and patient populations.
