Overview

Fetal Surgery is an advanced medical procedure used to correct conditions with the fetus prior to delivery. It is a highly specialized field of neonatal medicine, often used to treat severe birth defects or to assist with growth-restricting conditions before the baby is born. Fetal Surgery is performed on unborn babies at high-risk of developing medical problems, and can help improve neonatal outcomes. It is performed before the baby is born in an effort to avoid the risks of premature delivery and reduce the need for post-delivery surgeries or interventions. Fetal Surgery can have a positive effect on long-term outcomes, reducing the need for neonatal intensive care and/or long-term disability. It also can reduce the health-related costs associated with the long-term care of a baby with a severe birth defect or medical condition.
