Overview
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or within an ovary, the paired reproductive organs that produce eggs and sex hormones in the female body. Most ovarian cysts are functional, arising as a normal part of the menstrual cycle when a follicle either fails to release its egg or reseals and fills with fluid after ovulation. The majority are benign and resolve on their own without causing symptoms. When a cyst grows large, twists, or ruptures, it can produce pelvic pain or pressure, bloating, changes in the menstrual cycle, or abnormal bleeding. Some cysts are associated with underlying conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome or endometriosis, and a small proportion of ovarian masses require evaluation to distinguish benign from more serious growths. Diagnosis commonly involves pelvic examination and imaging such as ultrasound, sometimes supported by blood tests, and management ranges from watchful observation to medication or surgery depending on the cyst's size, appearance, and symptoms. As a topic within fertility biomarkers, ovarian cysts connect to the broader study of ovarian function, reproductive hormones, and the measurable markers used to assess female reproductive health.
