Overview

Sustainable agriculture is an approach to producing food, fiber, and other crops and to raising livestock that meets present needs while conserving natural resources and maintaining the long-term health of ecosystems, soils, and farming communities. It seeks to balance productivity with environmental stewardship and economic viability by using land, water, energy, and nutrients efficiently and by reducing harmful impacts on soil, water, and biodiversity. Core aspects of the topic include soil-fertility management and the responsible use of fertilizers and biofertilizers, conservation practices such as residue retention and reduced tillage, crop and resource diversification, permaculture and agroecological methods, and the integration of biological inputs such as cyanobacteria and mycorrhizal associations. Sustainable agriculture is also closely tied to broader concerns of food security, climate change, and land degradation, as well as to the education and outlook of future agricultural practitioners. The journal publishes research across these themes, including permaculture practices to improve sustainability, the perspectives of agricultural graduates on sustainable farming, strategic shifts to improve fertilizer response and grain production, the climate-change–land-degradation–food-security nexus, biotechnological applications of cyanobacteria, the use of biofertilizers in forage and dairy systems, residue retention for sustainability in semi-arid tropics, and conservation machinery for crop cultivation. This work reflects the agronomic, ecological, and socioeconomic dimensions of sustainable farming.
