Overview

Livestock production is the managed rearing of domesticated animals, cattle, sheep, goats, poultry and others, to supply food and by-products including meat, milk, eggs, hides and manure. It integrates animal breeding and reproduction, nutrition and feeding, health and disease control, and husbandry systems, and underpins food security, rural livelihoods and nutrient supply while also raising questions of efficiency and environmental impact. The research in this collection spans several of these pillars. Reproductive performance and breeding feature in studies of community-based sheep breeding programmes and assessment of fertility and sex ratio in crossbred dairy cattle. Animal health is addressed through work on ovine fasciolosis, bovine hydatidosis and anthelmintic activity against gastrointestinal nematodes, conditions that directly affect productivity and food safety. Nutrition and feed efficiency appear in evaluation of phytase-supplemented feeds for poultry growth and economic viability, and in forage consumption studies, while interest in insect-based foods reflects emerging alternative protein sources and sustainability concerns. Together these contributions present livestock production as a multidisciplinary enterprise in which genetic improvement, balanced nutrition, parasite and disease management, and economic considerations jointly determine output, animal welfare and the sustainability of supplying animal-source nutrition to growing populations.
