Overview
Farming is the practice of cultivating crops and raising animals to produce food, fiber, and other products for human use. It encompasses a wide range of activities and systems, from smallholder and subsistence agriculture to large-scale commercial operations, and includes arable cropping, livestock husbandry, aquaculture, and integrated and sustainable approaches such as permaculture. Modern farming must balance productivity with environmental stewardship, soil health, water quality, and resilience to climate change, while meeting the food needs of growing populations. As a research field, it spans agronomy, animal nutrition and health, soil fertility, crop protection, and the economics and sustainability of agricultural systems. Work relevant to this topic in OpenAccessPub journals includes the application of permaculture practices to improve sustainable agriculture in the Maltese Islands, studies of soil fertility and disease in enset-based farming in Ethiopia, the integration of caviaculture and fish farming in Cameroon, the use of phytase-supplemented feed in poultry production, and analyses of the climate change, land degradation, and food security nexus. Together these reflect the breadth of contemporary farming research across crops, livestock, and sustainability. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the topic.
