Overview

A crop is a cultivated plant grown and harvested for food, feed, fibre or other agricultural use, and crop science addresses the productivity, quality, physiology and management of these plants within farming systems. Improving crop performance involves variety selection and breeding, soil fertility and fertiliser management, water and stress tolerance, plant-growth regulation, weed and pest control, and the adoption of precision and sustainable practices, all balanced against environmental constraints and the imperatives of food security. The field integrates agronomy, soil science, plant physiology and agricultural technology. Research in this area includes permaculture practices to improve sustainable agriculture; standardised use of the plant-growth regulator mepiquat chloride for higher productivity of densely planted cotton; analysis of whether crop productivity must keep rising and how to sustain it; agro-ecological requirements and research achievements for hot pepper; the effects of drought and salt stress on cereal crops with proteomic and physiological study; residue retention and soil-health management for sustainability in semi-arid tropics; the climate change, land degradation and food security nexus; fertiliser response and strategic shifts to overcome stagnant foodgrain production; soil testing for fertiliser recommendation; and automated grassweed detection in wheat using emerging technologies. Across these contributions the field advances crop productivity and resilience through breeding, soil and nutrient management, stress physiology, weed control and precision agriculture, supporting sustainable and food-secure farming systems.
