Overview

Bariatric surgery is a group of surgical procedures performed to treat severe obesity by altering the digestive system to promote weight loss. Common procedures include sleeve gastrectomy, which removes a large portion of the stomach, and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes the small intestine; these work by limiting food intake, reducing nutrient absorption, and changing hormonal signals that influence appetite and metabolism. Bariatric surgery is generally considered for individuals with severe obesity, particularly when other approaches such as diet and exercise have not achieved adequate results, and it can lead to substantial and durable weight loss and improvement in obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes. It also carries risks and requires lifelong follow-up, including monitoring for nutritional deficiencies. Within the scope of this journal's focus on family medicine, bariatric surgery is relevant to the long-term care of patients before and after the procedure. Research published in the journal addresses related issues, including nutritional deficiencies in pregnancy after surgery for morbid obesity, Wernicke encephalopathy following sleeve gastrectomy, and the use of predictive markers to model weight loss after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Together these reflect attention to outcomes and complications of weight-loss surgery. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to bariatric surgery.
