Overview
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a system of health practice developed in China over many centuries that combines herbal medicines, acupuncture, dietary therapy, and exercises such as tai chi and qigong. It is grounded in concepts of balance and the flow of vital energy, and aims to treat the whole person while addressing the underlying causes of illness. Contemporary research increasingly applies methods such as network pharmacology, analytical chemistry and controlled study designs to investigate the active compounds in traditional remedies and to evaluate their effects and mechanisms. Reflecting the toxicology and pharmacology focus of this journal and its companion titles, related research has examined herbal and traditional treatments using modern approaches. Studies include a network-pharmacology strategy for predicting the therapeutic targets of beta-sitosterol in diabetic retinopathy, an analysis of stroke survivors' preference for herbal centres over hospitals, the effectiveness of the Luo Yuan technique in patients with hyperuricemia, and an evaluation of the analgesic and antipyretic activity of a medicinal root bark. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to Traditional Chinese Medicine and the scientific study of traditional and herbal therapies.
