Bioaccumulation

Bioaccumulation is a process in which contaminants are taken up and stored in the tissues of living organisms. It is an important element of the global biogeochemical cycling of elements, as it determines the concentrations of contaminants in food webs. Bioaccumulation is also of concern from a human health perspective, as more concentrated forms of contaminants can make their way up to the top of food webs and become a threat to humans. Bioaccumulation is often attributed to anthropogenic activities, such as the release of contaminants from industrial and agricultural activities. As humans are more exposed to the contaminants, there is an increased risk of adverse health effects. Therefore, bioaccumulation can pose a serious threat to our health and the environment and its careful management is necessary.
