Neutropenia
Neutropenia is an abnormally low number of neutrophils – a type of white blood cell – in blood. This condition occurs when the body doesn't produce enough neutrophils to fight off infections. Neutropenia can be caused by certain infections, medications, or diseases, such as cancer. It can also be a side effect of chemotherapy or radiation treatments. Left untreated, neutropenia increases the risk of infection and can lead to serious complications. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to treating neutropenia, treatments are available to help boost the number of neutrophils in the body, improving the immune system’s ability to fight off infection.
