Multipotency

Multipotency is the ability of a single cell to develop through multiple stages of differentiation and become multiple distinct cell types. This means that multipotent cells can differentiate into many other cell types, giving them a much higher degree of versatility than other cell types. This versatility makes multipotent cells useful for regenerative medicine and stem cell-based therapies. In addition, multipotency can help scientists better understand the processes of differentiation and development and how tissue development is controlled.

Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. They serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive. It can divide and become another type of cell such as a muscle cell.
