Overview

Molecular analysis is a set of laboratory approaches used to examine the molecular components of biological samples, such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, in order to identify them, characterize their structure, and understand their function. It enables the detection of genetic variants, the identification of organisms, the measurement of specific molecules, and the investigation of how cellular processes operate at the molecular level. These techniques are central to medicine, biotechnology, and biological research, where they support diagnosis, classification, and the study of disease mechanisms. Research relevant to molecular analysis spans genetics, microbiology, and clinical diagnostics. Studies have included the molecular analysis of a metabolic gene in affected patients, the molecular confirmation and identification of bacterial strains isolated in a hospital setting, molecular cytogenetic investigation of a chromosomal abnormality in a pediatric leukemia patient, the quantification of microRNAs for diagnostic screening of colon cancer, and the molecular screening of a SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern. Together these examples illustrate how molecular methods are applied to detect, identify, and characterize biological material across research and clinical contexts. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to molecular analysis and the molecular study of cells, genes, and organisms.
