Proteasomes
Proteasomes are protein complexes that are key to cell maintenance and health. They degrade damaged or obsolete proteins that have turned toxic and need to be eliminated from the cell. They are also responsible for regulating cell cycle progression and orchestrating antigen presentation and signal transduction. Proteasomes are essential for cellular development, physiological regulation and the removal of misfolded proteins that are linked to diseases such as cancer, diabetes and Parkinson's disease. By targeting and degrading specific proteins, proteasomes can modulate the cell's physiological functions and processes. They are increasingly being used in drug discovery and development, as well as in proteomic and molecular biology studies.
