Overview

Energy transfer is the movement of energy from one system, body, or location to another, or its transformation from one form into another, governed by the conservation of energy and the laws of thermodynamics. Heat energy transfers through conduction, the diffusion of thermal motion through matter; convection, the bulk movement of heated fluids; and radiation, the emission of electromagnetic waves requiring no medium. Energy is also transferred through mechanical work, electrical current, and chemical reactions, and at the molecular scale through processes such as resonance energy transfer between electronic states and vibrational energy redistribution. These mechanisms underpin biological processes including photosynthesis and cellular respiration, as well as engineered systems for heating, power generation, and optical and spectroscopic applications. In applied research, energy transfer concepts appear in contexts ranging from optimized delivery of ultraviolet-A light energy to the cornea in crosslinking procedures, to vibrational and electronic structure analyses of molecules using quantum-mechanical computation and experimental spectra. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research across the physical and applied sciences in which the transfer and transformation of energy is central, spanning thermal, electromagnetic, chemical, and molecular processes relevant to energy conversion, materials characterization, and the efficient use of energy.
