Overview

Testosterone is the principal male sex hormone, an androgen produced mainly by the testes in men and in smaller amounts by the ovaries in women and by the adrenal glands in both sexes. It plays a central role in male development and reproduction, driving the changes of puberty, supporting sperm production, and regulating sex drive and sexual function. Testosterone also contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle and bone, the distribution of body fat, red blood cell production, mood, and energy, and in women it serves important functions including as a precursor to estrogen. Its production is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, and abnormal levels, whether too high or too low, can affect health, fertility, and wellbeing. Research within Endocrinology and Hormones relevant to this topic includes studies of the effect of the pesticide dichlorvos on the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis, the down-regulation of steroidogenic genes and testicular changes induced by bisphenol A, the protective effect of fennel oil on impaired spermatogenesis, and the effects of plant extracts on gonadal hormones in male rats. These illustrate how environmental and dietary factors can influence androgen production and male reproductive function. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to testosterone, androgen biology, and male reproductive and endocrine health.
