Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops only during pregnancy. It occurs when the body cannot make enough insulin to handle the extra blood sugar that a woman develops during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes can be detrimental to a mother’s health and can put the baby at risk for health problems. It is important to get tested for gestational diabetes during pregnancy and to monitor blood sugar levels closely. Treatment typically involves lifestyle modifications and/or insulin therapy. Controlling gestational diabetes can help to keep mother and baby healthy, reduce the risk of complications during delivery, and potentially prevent type 2 diabetes later in life.
