Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder in which the body cannot produce enough (or any) insulin, or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. It is the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure, as well as heart disease, stroke and lower limb amputation. Diabetes can be controlled through lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, regular physical activity, and in some cases, medications, such as insulin injections. Left untreated, diabetes can cause serious health problems. By making lifestyle changes and, when necessary, taking medications, people with diabetes can reduce their risk of developing serious and potentially life-threatening complications.
