Diabetes and Endocrinology
Diabetes and endocrinology are medical disciplines that study how hormones and other chemical messengers integrate within the body in order to maintain homeostasis. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body produces too little of the hormone insulin, resulting in elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels. Endocrinology is the study of how hormones regulate various bodily functions. Endocrinologists diagnose and treat conditions related to hormones and glandular diseases, such as diabetes, thyroid disease, obesity, metabolic disorders, endocrine cancers, and reproductive disorders. By understanding how hormones interact in the body and how they can be impacted through lifestyle and diet, endocrinologists can help patients manage or treat these conditions. Through a better understanding of diabetes and endocrinology, health professionals can better diagnose, treat, and prevent these conditions.
