Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disorder in which the body cannot produce enough or any insulin, which is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy. Without the ability to properly regulate glucose, glucose levels can become dangerously high and lead to other health problems like nerve, kidney, and heart damage. Diabetes is one of the most common chronic health conditions in the world, and its prevalence is rising in both adults and children. There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Treatment of diabetes includes lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet, physical activity, and monitoring blood glucose levels. Medical interventions, such as insulin injections and oral medications, may also be necessary for those with type 1 diabetes or those who do not adequately respond to lifestyle changes.
