Adrenal Cortex

The adrenal cortex is the outer portion of the adrenal gland, a small organ located just above each kidney. It produces several important hormones, including cortisol and aldosterone, that help regulate metabolism, the immune system, and other processes. Cortisol has a major role in regulating stress levels and is also involved in the inflammatory response. Aldosterone helps to regulate blood pressure by controlling sodium and water balance in the body. The adrenal cortex is also important for producing androgens, which affect sexual development and fertility.
