Overview
Personal protective equipment (PPE) comprises the clothing, devices, and accessories worn or used to protect the wearer from physical, chemical, biological, or other workplace hazards. In healthcare and laboratory settings it includes items such as gloves, gowns, masks and respirators, eye and face protection, and footwear, and it forms a core component of infection prevention and control. By creating a barrier between the wearer and infectious or hazardous agents, PPE reduces the risk of transmission and injury, a function that proved especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic. Articles in this journal examine PPE and related protective practices largely in the context of infectious disease and occupational safety. Studies assess awareness of personal protective equipment among laboratory workers, review eye and facial protectors as well as torso and foot protection for pandemic and epidemic preparedness, and consider the impact of COVID-19 on surgical practice and on supply chains for protective materials. Other contributions address tuberculosis infection control among healthcare workers, knowledge and practice of infection prevention and control and of biomedical waste management, and vaccination among health workers. Collectively these works place PPE within the broader fields of infection control, occupational health, and pandemic response.
