Mechanisms of Drug Resistance
Drug resistance is a phenomenon where the effects of a drug are reduced by the adaptation of the organism treated by the drug, leading to a lower response. It can occur due to mutation, changes in gene expression, or other alterations to the organism's metabolic pathways that lead to reduced effectiveness of the drug. Drug resistance is an important issue in health care and it is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Understanding the mechanisms of drug resistance is key for the development of new cures and treatments for diseases. Scientists are researching various approaches, such as the use of genomics, to better understand and address drug resistance.
