Antibiotic Discovery and Development
Antibiotics are substances that are capable of killing or inhibiting the growth of microscopic organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and parasites. They have become a major tool in modern medicine and have dramatically reduced the prevalence of infections and consequently, improved human health. The discovery and development of antibiotics has enabled clinicians to rapidly and successfully treat infections that used to be untreatable or life-threatening before. The development of new antibiotics and new uses for existing antibiotics continues to be an important goal in modern medical research. As bacterial populations become increasingly resistant to existing antibiotics, new and more powerful ones are needed to contain them. Antibiotic discovery and development is thus a crucial area of research, enabling the continuous improvement of health outcomes.
