Vesicular Stomatitis Virus
Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) is a highly contagious virus that primarily affects horses, cattle, and swine and is spread by certain species of biting flies. It is typically not fatal, but it can cause severe weight loss and reduced milk production, leading to significant economic losses. VSV is also of considerable scientific interest because of its potential use as a vector for gene transfer and vaccine delivery. In particular, VSV has been recently used to deliver a gene encoding for an antibody against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, providing a potential therapeutic approach to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
