Overview

RNA viruses are a large group of viruses with genetic material composed of ribonucleic acid (RNA). They are responsible for a large portion of the diseases affecting humans, including measles, mumps, the common cold and influenza. RNA viruses are important in medicine, agriculture, and in biotechnology due to their ability to quickly adapt and evolve, allowing for new treatments, vaccines, and bioproducts to be developed. RNA viruses have also been implicated as a cause of cancer, making them a target for antiviral development.
